Shelfie, a mobile application that allows users to take a photo of their physical titles and get a free or discounted digital edition of those books, is partnering with scientific publisher De Gruyter to make its full catalogue of e-books available to Shelfie users.

Ben Ashroft, De Gruyter v-p, sales & marketing, said his company was always looking “participate in innovative business models that offer increased value to readers of our content.” De Gruyter publishes more than 1,300 new titles each year in the humanities, science and the law.

Shelfie offers access to about 450,000 e-books and 24,000 audiobooks through its app. Once readers have photographed the physical books on their shelves, Shelfie delivers a list of the digital titles available from those pictured in the photograph. The titles are offered for free or at a discount. Consumers can claim the e-book by photographing the print book’s copyright page marked with their handwritten name.

Mary Alice Elcock, v-p of content at Shelfie, said “The addition of De Gruyter makes Shelfie the hub of scientific and technical ebook bundling.”
